Spatial analysis for health and urban sustainability

We conduct spatial analysis studies and build geospatial software to foster healthy and sustainable places.

We collaborate with organizations, government agencies, and individuals in our two focus areas:

Focus 1: Health

To solve the most pressing issues in public health, policymakers need to understand spatial health disparities and their drivers. We can help explore the importance of location for health:

  • Mapping health outcomes using geostatistics and small area estimation.
  • Estimating access to healthcare, including travel time to healthcare, relative use of services, and their effect on health outcomes.
  • Spatial scenario modeling to understand the effects of policy options on health across neighborhoods, cities, and counties.
  • Interactive visualizations to communicate health disparities to decision-makers and the public.

Focus 2: Building sustainable cities

Geographic methods can inform bold and equitable urban policy. Our services include:

  • Mapping walkable neighborhoods: comparing travel time to key amenities and pedestrian infrastructure across city blocks
  • Policy analysis: projecting how policy changes such as additional amenities, city services, or modes of transit can reshape neighborhoods
  • Measuring equity: analyzing how changes to comprehensive plans or city codes will be experienced differently across neighborhoods and in marginalized communities

What we offer:

Academic rigor with professional reliability: our projects incorporate the latest innovations in spatial analysis, GIS, software development, and our focus areas of work.

Consultations: we meet with our partners throughout each project to build trust and guide the design process.

Technical capacity-building: with trainings ranging from introductory GIS to advanced spatial statistics, we ensure that partners can use our tools to the fullest.

Evidence you can act on: we share uncertainty metrics and provide caveats for all our analyses so our partners can gauge the strength of the evidence before making decisions.
